WORKOUT RECAP

This week was pretty decent, as far as exercise goes.  There were some slow days, but some really good workouts, too!

{Monday} 5 mile treadmill run.  I ran the first 3.5 at a moderate-but-not-lazy pace, and then the last bit I bumped up the pace.  I like running fast!

{Tuesday} I went to a coworkers house to put some finishing touches on my Halloween costume. I got back too late to go to my power pump class, so instead I did these two (arms & legs) at home workouts.  They aren't even close to the workout I would have gotten at class, but anything is better than nothing.

{Wednesday} 1.25 miles on the treadmill -- do you ever have workouts that just aren't working?  That's how I felt when I was running.  I was like ugh....get me off of this blasted treadmill!  So I hopped on the stationary bike and put in 15 minutes.  I figured that it was about 30 minutes, and at least I sweat and got my heart rate up.

{Friday} I knew I wasn't going to run on the treadmill.  I was just too bored of it, but it was too late to go run outside, so I had to be creative with what I could motivate myself to do at the gym on a Friday night.

I decided to do a little speed walking -- I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes at a brisk pace & then did an arm/shoulder workout with weights.  I never used to care about arms at all, but lately, I have been on a quest for some nicely toned arms!

Sidenote -- why is it that the gym still has plenty of men working out on Friday night but virtually no women?  I felt so awkward lifting weights will all these beefsters and no women!  Seriously -- here I am next to the weight rack picking up my 5's and 10's and this huge -- HUGE -- man says "excuse me," because I'm in his way.  No, he was not getting any 5's or 10's...he was getting the 65's on the bottom rack. Geesh.

{Saturday} 10 mile run.  Do you ever play mental games with yourself to get yourself to do something that you do not want to do?  I really didn't want to do this run today.  I knew it would take so much time, and I just wanted to read (I'm reading Inferno, by Dan Brown.  I've never read any of his books before, but it is feeling a lot like the Stieg Larsson books, with less language, so I'm excited to keep reading.)

Anyway, back to the story.  I have a few mind tricks that I use regularly.  The one I use most often is, "just get in your gym clothes, and then see how you feel." It works like a charm.  There is something about being in tight spandex that makes you want to get your booty in gear!  Am I right?

So I went to the running store first to pick up a few items (more on that later!) and then headed out.  The run was nice.  I was overdressed, which was a pain.  The first 3 miles zipped by, although I was still thinking, hmm, I could just make this a 6 mile run instead of 10.  The rest of the run was pretty uneventful. I was happy to have it done, and happy to have done it.  Only a couple more long runs until race day!

This Week's Plan:
Running: 5, 6, 3
Other: Power pump, online yoga?

Do you have mind tricks that get you to do something you don't want to do?
What is a book you've loved lately?

  1. Getting dressed and ready to go is a good way to get out the door. Sometimes I will tell myself, "okay, I will just run 1-2 miles and see how it goes--knowing that once I get going it will feel fine and I can build on the distance. Finally, sometimes I swap out a planned route with a great route--so, while I may not be motivated to do a basic route, I will trade up to a great (perhaps scenic) route. You can search this subject--all runners face it and we're all willing to give free, expert opinions!

    1. I did this on Saturday. I was not feeling well, but I thought, "I'll just get going and see if I can keep going." I ended up doing 4 miles instead of 6, but that is better than 0.

I still need to find some great routes. The only ones I've loved have been down the canyon.

  2. I did some online yoga this morning - only 15 minutes with the boys running around everywhere but I felt better. I am always shocked how my insides feel totally cleared out with just some deep breathing!!

I'm excited to hear how your race go, your exercise routine is seriously inspiring!

    1. Heather -- do you have any videos you like? I am still looking! I want to do yoga more, because I love it, too! But it always seems like I drop it out of my week. Let me know if you have any favorites!
